Schedule of Care

A standard schedule of care for a normal pregnancy is listed below. Your appointments may need to be more frequent should any complications arise.

First trimester

We advise our clients to have:

  • A viability scan is done first before attending an initial consultation with an obstetrician. The Viability scan can be done anytime between six and a half and eight weeks of your pregnancy. We recommend these sonographers for your first scan.
  • Nuchal Ultrasound Scan- the scan will need to be done at week 12 at the scan clinic. Click here for the contact details of a consultant sonographer.
  • Your consultant obstetrician will offer you a general blood test.

8 weeks- Booking appointment

10 weeks- Harmony blood test can be done anytime from week ten at one of the scan clinics.

12 weeks- please have a Nuchal scan done so that the report will be ready for the appointment.

"By week 11 your baby's taste buds have developed to taste the amniotic fluid that surrounds them and the kidneys are now functioning and secreting fluid into their bladder. Your baby also breathes amniotic fluid into their lungs to strengthen the muscle under them (the diaphragm) and to regularly practise rhythmic expansion of their lungs."

Second trimester

During this period, you will need to have an

  • An anomaly scan would take a close look at your baby and your womb. The sonographer will check that your baby is developing normally and look at where the placenta is lying. The scan report will be discussed with you during your 20 weeks appointment.
  • You will also have a second-trimester blood test between weeks 26 and 28. This will include the mini glucose blood test to check for gestational diabetes. For more information on how to prepare for the test, please click here.

16 weeks

20 weeks- An anomaly ultrasound scan report is required for this appointment.

23 weeks

26 weeks- second-trimester blood test, including the mini glucose test.

"By week 20 your baby can hear sounds, including the sound of your heartbeat, and they are learning to recognise your voice, although the ears are not yet fully formed."

Third trimester

The antenatal appointments become more regular, and you will need to be seen weekly from 36 weeks; we may need to start seeing you weekly earlier than 36 weeks if your delivery is planned before week 38.

  • You will need to have an ultrasound scan done at week 32 to check your baby's growth. The report will be discussed with you during the consultation.
  • You will have a routine blood test done.
  • We highly recommend having a Group B Streptococcus test if you are aiming for a vaginal delivery. The test should be done at week 36 and sooner if you need an earlier delivery, but you will be guided by your obstetrician during one of the appointments. The kit can be order at the Doctors Laboratory's website.

30 weeks

32 weeks- A growth scan is done with a consultant sonographer, and the report will be discussed during an appointment with your consultant.

34 weeks- third-trimester blood test done during your appointment

36 weeks- you will make a delivery plan during this or your next appointment with your consultant; also, please have a Group B Streptococcus home test kit done and send the sample to the Doctors Laboratory if you are aiming for a vaginal delivery.

37 weeks

38 weeks

39 weeks

40 weeks

If your obstetrician booked you for a cesarean section, you will need to have a blood test done 48h before the procedure.

"Baby's hearing is getting more sensitive. Keep on talking and singing to them and encouraging family members to do the same. They’ll recognise the sounds of your voices after they're born."

Postnatal care

After your baby is born, we would like to see you one-week post-delivery to ensure all is well.

If there are no complications/ concerns, your consultant obstetrician will need to see you six weeks post delivery. You will be discharged from our care if there are no further issues.
